Fresh off the Boat

Growing up, my grandma used to tell us stories about her brother who lives in Los Angeles. Twenty years later, we are finally visiting them! So here’s the gist of the story: my grandpop owns this cafe. I always thought it’s a chinese restaurant since they are migrants from Taiwan. But…it’s far from that.

They live up in the valley. Suburban LA. More than an hour away from downtown Los Angeles. The neighbourhood is awesome tho. It’s quiet and peaceful. Far from what my neighbourhood is like back in Manila.

This was our home away from home for the first three days.

Back to the story. My grandpop owns an American Diner called Flooky’s!

They serve burgers, hotdogs, fries, hashbrowns, omelettes– basically American food. I was so amazed when I found out. I thought he owns something like Panda Express. Real life Fresh Off the Boat here!

It was a quick but meaningful three day visit. We were able to see some relatives that we havent seen for so long. It was the perfect three days to settle in before I go on a month long journey around the US.
